About Us

Kathy Yakal LLC is owned and operated by Kathy Yakal, a writing and marketing veteran who has a demonstrated track record of versatility and editorial excellence. Most of my work over the last several years has been for three publications:

  •  Barron's. I was hired to write the Electronic Investor columnist in 1996. Columns explored and analyzed investor research Websites. I pioneered the publication's Best of the Web feature, which ran annually for several years.
  • PC Magazine. For almost 15 years, I was the lead financial writer, reviewing personal finance, tax, and small business accounting software.

  • Kiplinger's Personal Finance Magazine. I originated the magazine's technology column in the 90's, which explained and analyzed a variety of personal and small business computer products and technologies.

Samples from Kiplinger's  and Barron's are available online, but there is a fee to view them. If  interested, please contact me and I will forward them to you (or see the Sample Articles page). Since I've been writing exclusively for PC Magazine and Barron's for several years, much of my older work can't be found on the Web.

Pre-Web:

I wrote about personal and business hardware and software, including a stint at Lawson Software, a developer of business software for mainframes and minicomputers.

In the mid-80s, I was an editor and writer at the now-defunct COMPUTE! Publications, whose numerous magazines and books chronicled the rise and fall of the 8-bit computers, like the Commodore 64 and Apple II.

Prior to that, I contributed to several Minneapolis-St. Paul area publications, including the Twin Cities Reader, Edina Magazine, and the Sun Community Directories.
